New West Coast Modern Pentathlon Champions Crowned at Wolfpack Regional

Some of the top Modern Pentathletes in the United States gathered in San Mateo, CA, and Redwood City, CA, on April 28, 2024, to compete for championship titles across age divisions at the 2024 Wolfpack Regional Modern Pentathlon, the first-ever Modern Pentathlon event held on the West Coast to feature the modified form of the sport of Modern Pentathlon as it will be featured at the LA2028 Games.

The first event of the Modern Pentathlon was the Ninja Obstacle Course Race (OCR) event, in which 21 competitors from ages 7 to 61 took on 8 standard competition obstacles, including Progressive Steps, Big Wheel, Wall, Monkey Bars, Balance Beam, Rings, Horizontal Wheels, and Warped Wall.

The overall winner of the Ninja OCR event was Holden Tinker, age 14, who completed the course in an astounding 48.0 seconds. Rounding out the top three were Jhovani Mendoza (49.0 seconds) and Boris Teodorovich (50.5 seconds).

The top female athletes, and the only two female athletes to complete the course successfully, were Cecily Ahn, age 12 (1:26.5), and Andrea Kiwala (1:27.0). In the end, only 10 athletes completed the course successfully.

The Fencing event was the second event of the Modern Pentathlon. In the adult fencing division, Boris Teodorovich was the winner, finishing with 20 victories and 4 defeats and winning the bonus round. Kirt Iverson took second place with 19 victories and 5 defeats and one win in the bonus round. Jeanette Lee took third place with 12 victories and 12 defeats and one win in the bonus round.

The winner of the youth fencing division was Neallie Gillis-Pade, who had 19 victories and 5 defeats. Theodore Ahn finished in second place with 18 victories and 6 defeats. Siddhant Swaminathan took third place with 14 victories, 10 defeats, and three wins in the bonus round.

The third event of the Modern Pentathlon was the swimming event. In the 200-yard swim, Boris Teodorovich took first place (2:04.71), Kirt Iverson took second place (2:36.43), and Gabriel Larot took third place (2:41.26) in the male division. In the female division, Neallie Gillis-Pade took first place (2:18.72), Cindy Reed took second place, and Yueyan Liang took third place.

In the 100-yard swim, Iver Iverson (age 12) took first place (1:06.44), Kirt Iverson took second place (1:10.45), and Gabriel Larot took third place (1:17.15) in the male division. In the female division, Ivy Iverson (age 14) took first place (1:14.75), Jeanette Lee took second place, and Cecily Ahn took third place. Ryan Art won the 50-yard swim (uncontested).

The fourth and fifth events of the Modern Pentathlon, combined running and laser pistol shooting, brought the Modern Pentathlon to its exciting conclusion.

The overall leader of the Modern Pentathlon in the Seniors Men’s division, Boris Teodorovich, started the laser-run with a 1:30 head start over the rest of the field based on his points earned in the previous events.

Despite finishing in third place in the laser-run, Teodorovich held on for the overall win with a total of 1250 points. Kirt Iverson won the laser-run and finished in second place overall with 965 points. Bryant Art, a new-comer competing in his first Modern Pentathlon, took second place in the laser-run and third place overall with 915 points.

In the Seniors Women’s division, Cindy Reed won the laser-run and finished in first place overall with 695 points. Yueyan Liang took second place overall. Andrea Kiwala, who competed only in the Ninja OCR event, took third place overall.

In the Masters Men’s 60+ division, Ranel Laroco, who competed only in the Ninja OCR event, took first place (uncontested).

In the Masters Women’s 30+ division, Jeanette Lee took first place, Yueyan Liang took second place, and Andrea Kiwala took third place.

In the Masters Men’s 30+ division, Bryant Art took first place, Kirt Iverson took second place, and Jim Atherton, competing in his first Modern Pentathlon, took third place.

In the youth divisions, Neallie Gilles-Pade won the U17 Girls division, Ashton Smedley won the U17 Boys division, Ivy Iverson won the U15 Girls division, Cecily Ahn won the U13 Girls division, and Ryan Art won the U11 Boys division (all uncontested).

In the hotly-contested U15 Boys division, Theodore Ahn took first place, Siddhant Swaminathan took second place, and Hunter Tinker took third place.

By virtue of their participation in the 2024 Wolfpack Regional Modern Pentathlon Championships, each athlete qualified for the 2024 USA Pentathlon Multisport (USAPM) National Championships, which will be held on July 13, 2024, at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, CO.
